Syra Porter
Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) MEd, MSc, MA
Welcome! I'm Syra, and I'm a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) in private practice. I have a Master of Education in Counselling Psychology, a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy and a Master of Arts in Human Development. I worked for a little over 7 years in both inpatient and outpatient adult mental health and addictions programs. I’ve facilitated and co-facilitated groups as well as providing individual psychotherapy.
I'm multiracial and know what it’s like to feel 'othered' and not quite belonging to one or the other. I've personally experienced the healing effects of feeling fully seen, heard, and understood. I'll meet you wherever you're at with compassion, creativity, playfulness, empathy and genuine connection.
My own lived experience has deeply motivated me to help you towards realizing and building on your strengths, finding your true self, improving your relationship with yourself, your body, others and experiencing transformational growth.

My Approach
My approach is very collaborative and I integrate a mix of evidence-based therapies to meet your unique needs. I am a life long learner and have training in Emotion Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Mindfulness.
If you'd like to learn a little more about each of these therapies you can read about them below:
Emotion-Focused Therapy: discovering and experiencing your true self and being guided by the important information your emotions carry to promote transformational growth.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: living by your values so you can live more meaningfully and in a way that is being true to who you are at your core. This involves learning skills to help tolerate the difficult thoughts and emotions that often arise when we try new ways of being.
Compassion Focused Therapy: learning how our brains have evolved to protect us and how to bring balance to the way you relate to your self, others, and life’s challenges.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: looking at how your thoughts influence your emotions and actions and vice versa. It involves experimenting with baby steps to gradually move towards the change you want to see in your life.
Mindfulness: being more fully present in the moment without judgement
